Former Topeka High and Gardner-Webb swingman Onzie Branch has been selected in the first round with the 10th overall pick of the BSN Draft by Capitanes de Arecibo in Puerto Rico’s top professional league.

Branch, a 2010 graduate of Topeka High who averaged 4.3 points in 66 games at Gardner-Webb (2012-14), will begin play with Arecibo on Feb. 6 in the Liga Americas. His teammates with Arecibo will include former NBA players Guillermo Diaz and Blake Ahern.

Branch has ties to Puerto Rico through his maternal grandfather, who still resides there.

The 6-foot-6, 215-pound wing averaged 5.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 15.2 minutes in his final season at Gardner-Webb, a Division I school in Boiling Springs, N.C. that plays in the Big South Conference.

Branch, 23, becomes the third player from Topeka to play professionally this season joining Kyle Weems (JSF Nanterre, France) and Antowine Lamb (Managua, Nicaragua).

Branch is one of four Topeka High players to play Division I basketball since 2000.
